The Gospel Paraphrased

There are many fine translations of the Gospels readily available.  This paraphrase is not meant to replace them.  Rather the intention here is to offer a more contemporary rendering so that you can imaginatively translate the Gospel into your own situation.

This Sunday's Gospel Paraphrased

Yes, this paraphrase begins oddly but it should give some idea of what it would have sounded like to those first readers of this Gospel. The word of God came into a world like our own.

Luke 3:1-6

In the sixty-sixth year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, when Scott Morrison was Prime Minister of Australia, Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland, Margaret Strelow, Mayor of Rockhampton and Jorge Mario Bergoglio, serving as Pope Francis, the word of God came to John, son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went through the entire Jordan region, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

This was just as it had been written in the Book of the prophet Isaiah,
A voice imploring in the wilderness:
Prepare a way for the Lord!
Make his ways straight.
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill be brought low.
The crooked will be straightened,
the rough made smooth.
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
